CNN Battle with Sean Spicer Continues as He Shuts Out Jim Acosta

Continuing an alarming pattern of the White House shutting out the press and the public and curtailing transparency, White House press secretary Sean Spicer on Monday will answer questions from reporters in a restricted setting.

Acosta last week raised objections to the restriction of cameras and recording equipment from briefings, and accused the White House of "stonewalling" and the "suppression of information".

"During an appearance on "CNN Newsroom with Brooke Baldwin", Acosta said the Trump White House has "blackballed" CNN and has not taken his questions in "weeks".

"I'm sorry that you have to do this", Spicer said, as Acosta repeatedly asked why the cameras were off earlier in the briefing. "It's a legitimate question", Acosta said, as Yingst asked Spicer, to "get this out of the way" and address why the cameras are off.

"Why not turn the cameras on, Sean?" he interjected.

Spicer did not say when the next on-camera briefing would be held. Spicer then apologized to the reporter Acosta was interrupting.

The press secretary ignored Mr Acosta's shouts.

Board members of the White House Correspondents Association met with Spicer on Monday and expressed the importance of Americans getting the chance to question leaders. In addition, some outlets - particularly the New York Times and Washington Post - have been able to circumvent official White House channels with leaks from administration officials. The White House has appeared to adopt a communications strategy of dealing primarily with its base of supporters, as witnessed by Trump's two interviews in the past week with Fox News Channel's morning show, "Fox & Friends". "We aren't satisfied with the current situation and won't be until it changes".

But other than advocating for more access, there isn't much the White House Correspondents' Association can do, Mason acknowledged.

Shortly after the meeting, Spicer held an off-camera briefing. "I want the president's voice to carry the day". Even when the briefings are not aired immediately on news networks, clips are frequently used in news packages. The White House said Trump wasn't answering questions.
