Yachting: New Zealand win America's Cup

Yachting: New Zealand win America's Cup

HAMILTON, Bermuda, June 26 Emirates Team New Zealand takes to Bermuda's Great Sound on Monday with a mission, to finally wipe out the hurt inflicted on the sports-mad country by Oracle Team USA in the America's Cup.

"We are not taking anything for granted", New Zealand helmsman Peter Burling said after coolly steering his space-age 50-foot (15 metre) catamaran to yet another win on Sunday over the team's nemesis, Oracle Team USA's skipper Jimmy Spithill.

The Kiwis took a 6-1 lead into Monday's fifth day of racing in the 2017 event and landed the sucker punch with a win in race nine to clinch the oldest trophy in sport for the first time since the successful defense of 2000.

While Team New Zealand and Oracle Team USA battled it out in Bermuda, a Dunedin teenager was completing the race of her life in the same waters.

At 26, Burling is now the youngest helmsman to hoist the oldest trophy in global sport — a distinction previously held by opposite number Spithill, who won the cup in 2010 aged 30. It has been three years of hard work. In the cup match, they sweep Conner's Stars and Stripes 5-0, sparking huge celebrations at home.

"It's absolutely been an awesome journey for us as a team and personally that feeling of relief, I guess, right at the moment and huge satisfaction as a fantastic group of people and fantastic team", Ashby said.

"It's been an unbelievable journey for us as a team", he said.

Last night the Sky Tower was lit up in honour of Emirates Team New Zealand, although you may not have known it. Lighting a building "black and white" involves just lighting it in the regular way except with half the lights off.

By the third mark of the ninth race Emirates Team NZ had a 34 second lead.

"We would also like to pass on our congratulations to the entire team, from the likes of chief executive Grant Dalton to the boat builders and sail makers, and chief operations officer Kevin Shoebridge and skipper Glenn Ashby to the designers".

For the 39-year-old Australian, the win was all the sweeter, as it signalled a remarkable turnaround since San Francisco.

But after dispatching British legend Ben Ainslie s Land Rover BAR and Sweden s Artemis Racing in the knockout stages to book a rematch with the USA, New Zealand were in dominant form. To be able to win eight races in Beautiful Bermuda in front of a big crowd of our own fans is overwhelming, we're just happy to be able to share this moment with them, we're just blown away. "What a series. They really made fewer mistakes and they fully deserve it so our hat s off to them", Spithill said.
