British Columbia's NDP introduces motion to topple provincial gov't

British Columbia's NDP introduces motion to topple provincial gov't

In a response to the June 22 Throne Speech, the government's agenda for the legislative session, John Horgan, the leader of the left-leaning New Democrats (NDP) said the provincial government no longer had the confidence of the house.

There are at least 30 items promised in Clark's throne speech that were never mentioned in the BC Liberal election platform just seven weeks ago, but could be found in the other two parties' documents.

Lets see this for what it is - a cynical strategy to bleed support from the Greens and NDP and an attempt to fix her image and force an election to win back her majority.

"I expect that if the government falls, the NDP and Greens will match all this - but the key will still be what the individual limit will be", Mr. Conacher said, noting that none of the parties has stated what the donation limit should be.

Green Leader Andrew Weaver appealed in a statement for the Liberals to provide a Speaker to a future NDP government.

Weaver said the Greens are committed to the confidence vote, even if it means rejecting Liberal reforms that his party supports. "The confidence vote will take place on Thursday". "I would encourage all members of this House, therefore, to vote in favour of the throne speech that was presented last week", Clark said.

"This is a parliamentary democracy, and if at the end of the day there is to be a transition, if the two opposition parties, as they have and appear resolved to do, wish to govern and the lieutenant-governor agrees that it is in the best interest of the province, that's fine".

The current political situation in ludicrous.

"I think people understand that politicians meet with people, but they also, I hope, understand that the fact that someone, anyone, has made a donation is in no way determinative of how a government will deal with a particular public policy in any way, shape or form", he said at the time.

The Liberals introduced a bill to ban union and corporate donations to political parties, as well as a bill to give the Greens party status in the legislature.

The bills were killed immediately upon introduction, with the NDP and Greens outvoting the Liberals 44-42. "For 16 years they have failed to act while continuing to accept millions in corporate donations".

And so much for all the worries in the media about the speaker having to break tie votes regularly - with this throne speech, the BC Liberals have declared they will support practically every NDP and Green legislation imaginable. "The road to stability and the road to being able to make sure that government, working together in this legislature, can get on with the business in this house, is to support the throne speech and ensure we can keep the business of government going on".
