Jayson Tatum ready to toughen up for Celtics

Jayson Tatum ready to toughen up for Celtics

Tatum, a Third Team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection, averaged 16.8 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 1.1 blocks, while shooting 45.2 percent from the field for the Blue Devils.

You can say that after Thomas and Horford run their course, this this will be the time for all these picks to come to fruition, Marcus Smart and Jaylen Brown and now Tatum, but again, there is no guarantee any of them are going to turn into what Butler IS right now.

Although slated to pick third, the Boston Celtics ultimately passed on Jackson's services after being unable to host a pre-draft workout with him. "I was all for it".

At 6-foot-8 with a 6-foot-11 wingspan, Tatum brings unique length and athleticism to the defensive end that can translate into guarding multiple positions on the court.

Boston owned the No. 1 pick in the draft but traded it to Philadelphia this week in exchange for the No. 3 pick and a future first-rounder.

But, as we've learned down on Route 1 in Foxboro, draft parties are overrated.

"I look at it as a great opportunity", said Tatum.

- Jimmy Butler. He's a very good player - a star, but not a superstar.

Ainge, who briefly played for the Kings during his National Basketball Association career, joked "there's nothing to do in Sacramento".

"It's an incredible feeling", Tatum said on ESPN.

Asked how confident he is that the Celtics can make a splashy move this summer, Ainge responded, "I'm confident". They then opened the second round by drafting Duke guard Frank Jackson at No. 31 overall but traded him to the New Orleans Pelicans for Florida State guard Dwayne Bacon. It's like you're playing poker with guys. "They can wait to see if Tatum or Johnathan Isaac falls to sixth".

"I told Jayson this morning that before anybody on our Summer League roster takes the floor, we'll talk about who we want to be and how we want to go about our approach in our business", said Stevens.

"My favorite player right now would be Paul George", Tatum said.

In the meantime, they can help each other grow and push each other to be the best players they can be while wearing Boston Celtics green. A year ago it was Cal product Jaylen Brown, who by most accounts had a fairly productive rookie campaign.

Tatum said he was eager to dive in with a team that won an East-best 53 games last season and advanced to the conference finals.

All of that was clearly illustrated on Friday afternoon when Tatum met the Boston media at the Celtics training facility in Waltham, roughly 16 hours after Boston selected the Duke freshman forward with the third overall pick in the National Basketball Association draft. "We're big fans. He's a great kid, has a great work ethic". He can shoot and we needed a guy like him.

"One of the things he fits with is not only the way we want to play, but also who we want to be, and I think that's really important".

He said that no one in the entire Boston Celtics organization talked to Josh.
