Lockdown lifted at military post; no injuries reported

A lockdown has been lifted at an Alabama military installation, though officials say they are still investigating a possible active shooter incident there. There was an active shooter training exercise scheduled for this week but the station reported the incident was not related.

"My office is aware of the developing situation at Redstone Arsenal, and we are monitoring it closely".

During a news conference just after noon, Redstone spokesman Chris Colster said "We aren't sure what triggered this".

Redstone said in a statement, "The installation was in lock-down mode with all gates closed, and employees sheltered in place at their respective buildings".

Amy Jay, whose husband was working at the Sparkman Center, said he was told the situation was over through an announcement over the building's public address system.

Holliday said 911 received two calls from the Sparkman Center around 9 a.m., one saying shots were fired and the other saying someone saw a weapon.

An active shooter drill was planned for Wednesday at the arsenal, but officials said today's lockdown was not part of the drill.

In addition to hosting Army Aviation and Missile Command, which tests and develops missile programs, the almost 38,000 acre post hosts 70 other organizations, including the FBI, Air Force units and NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey's office couldn't provide any details.

While there is no word on any injuries or casualties at this time, ambulances were seen responding to Redstone.

An Army email sent to facility personnel and relatives shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday said an active shooter was reported on Building 5301's second floor.

The childcare centers at Redstone Arsenal confirmed that all the children are safe and locked down.

Civilian rocket research was moved to NASA's neighboring Marshall Space Flight Center in 1960.

The Army post has a government and contractor workforce that averages 36,000 to 40,000 personnel.

The Redstone Arsenal is military installation in northern Alabama.
