Chernobyl Nuclear Plant Among Thousands Affected By Latest Mass Cyber Attack

A Swiss government agency also reported computer systems were affected in India, though the country's cyber security agency said it had yet to receive any reports of attacks. "Companies are just not doing what they are supposed to do to fix the problem".

Petya ransomware is especially damaging, as it encrypts not only certain user files, but also the computer's file table and Master Boot Record.

The group behind the latest attack remains unknown.

"Petya spread via email spam with booby-trap@kkped (Microsoft) Office documents. The documents, once opened, will download and run the Petya installer and execute the Server Message Block (SMB) worm to spread to other computers", SingCERT said.

"We are continuing to investigate and will take appropriate action to protect customers", a spokesman for the company said, adding that Microsoft antivirus software detects and removes it.

A massive cyberattack that freezes computers and demands a ransom to open them has hit companies in the USA and around the world today, US officials and private cybersecurity analysts say.

Affected users have been blocked from accessing their computer's files or hard drives, and told to pay a ransom in bitcoin to a designated account. But "we have also registered hits in Poland, Italy, the UK, Germany, France, the U.S. and several other countries". The U.K. National Health Service was one of the hardest organizations hit, with over 20 percent of its trusts shut down by the virus.

As for why the strain has suddenly become more virulent, Bleeping Computer said it's likely the Petya author was inspired by the WannaCry attacks.

The NSA did not respond to a request for comment.

In Ukraine the virus struck the country's government administration.

An advisor to Ukraine's interior ministry, Anton Gerashchenko, called the cyber-attack the worst in the country's history in a post on his Facebook page.

"The hacking attack could lead to serious consequences, but the company has moved to a reserve production processing system and neither oil output nor refining have been stopped", it said on Twitter. Russia's Rosneft energy company also reported falling victim to hacking, as did shipping company A.P. Moller-Maersk, which said every branch of its business was affected.

United Kingdom advertising agency WPP, which owns JWT, Ogilvy & Mather and Young & Rubicam, and which has offices in Dublin, has also been affected.

A massive cyberattack that freezes computers and demands a ransom to open them has hit companies in the USA and elsewhere around the world, US officials and private cybersecurity analysts said Tuesday. "Perhaps you are looking for a way to recover your files, but don't waste your time". One consumer lender, Home Credit, had to suspend client operations.

It impacted Russian oil and steel companies, French construction materials firm Saint-Gobain, and USA pharmaceuticals firm Merck. Ukrainian airports and railways are operating as usual, according to the Russian news service.

Symantec said in a tweet that its analysts had "confirmed Petya ransomware, like WannaCry, is using EternalBlue exploit to spread".

At the moment, there is little information to who might be responsible for the attack, but security experts are certain it's ransomware.
