Dad 'Wanted to Kill' Man Who Found His Lost Toddler

Dad 'Wanted to Kill' Man Who Found His Lost Toddler

When a protective father saw his 2-year-old daughter headed toward a parking lot with an older man, he immediately sprang into action, charged at the stranger and attacked him.

Police say that a good Samaritan who found a toddler roaming around a Central Florida park this weekend got quite the surprise from the girl's father: a beating.

But the dad tells WFLA all he saw was a odd man walking towards the parking lot with his daughter.

Meanwhile, police say the good Samaritan could have pressed charges against Strickland but didn't because he, himself, is a dad and understands that Strickland was frantic over his girl going missing.

A man trying to help a lost little girl was mistaken as a child predator, attacked, and shamed on social media.

"This guy is a father, a local businessman, has two children, was trying to help this child but they turned it completely around", Gross told the station, "And that's not right". The man did the right thing and spoke to the girl, trying to find out where her parents are.

A good Samaritan did what nearly anyone would do: try to reunite a lost child with his or her family.

"I thought he was trying to take my daughter", the girl's father told News Channel 8 in Lakeland.

But the father and his friends and family aren't taking the man at his word. As they passed men along the way he asked her if they were her father. The Good Samaritan does not have a criminal history and officers verified that he was there visiting friends, who happened to be off-duty deputies. Police say people should be careful what to post on social media because inaccurate posts could victimize innocent people.

The Lakeland Police Department issued a statement on Facebook confirming that it "thoroughly investigated this incident" and found that "no crime was committed". I wanted to kill the man, ' Strickland told FOX 13. "Before posting information on matters such as this, we encourage people to identify the source and the validity of such claims before sharing them", Gross said.

According to WFLA, other media outlets and police, family members and friends went on social media and shared the man's photo, his Facebook page and his place of business, "calling him a child predator", WFLA said. "Not at all!" The Good Samaritan did not file any charges against the girl's family. Posting false information on Facebook could cause a defamation of character claim and those posting false information could be held liable.
