Google News finally gets a much needed refreshed design

When it comes to the content of the information being presented, Google has chose to wade into the issues related to identifying reliable news sources. It's there for everything from moments of political change to gripping sports events to daily local news.

Anand Paka, the product manager for Google News, told me that the guiding idea behind the redesign was to build an uncluttered user interface that makes the product more accessible to mainstream news consumers.

Google today unveiled a new look for its 14-year-old news reader that makes the web service much easier to digest.

The new layout focuses on key elements, such as publisher names and article labels.

Up next, there's a new navigation bar with "Headlines, ' "Local" as well as "For You" tabs". The news service provides local news its own tab as it's planning to expand on this section over time. In "Local", you can track stories from any part of the world that you care about-from your hometown to where you do business to where you went to school. The latter is again based on your interests and creates a "mini news feed" of articles that might be of interest to you.

There are "Story Cards" which Paka says are created to "help you explore different perspectives to gain a well-rounded understanding of an issue". It offers genuine news content, which has undergone several reviews. If what's presented in a card isn't enough, you can tap the "view full coverage" link to be taken to a page filled with stories, videos, and tags about that particular item. Articles display in a card format, there's an icon-based sidebar and buttons are bigger and bolder.

Facts are at the heart of a story's credibility. Google says the airier design is "designed for readability" and will make it easier to scan stories. Now we're adding a Fact Check block on the right column of "Headlines" that shows the top fact checked articles recently published (this feature is currently available in the USA only). Videos, top stories, cards, and simpler navigation have all arrived as well.

Videos and tweets have gained prominence, being labelled with "most referenced" and placed in related coverage cards.

Searching for interesting stories to read on Google News is something some people do in preference to reading newspapers, because there are so many sources you're getting access to in one go that you just can't get even if you managed to have a dozen newspapers in front of you - impractical though that would be.
