In spite of tweet, lawyer says Trump not under investigation

The Washington Post reported on June 14 that Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who was appointed after Comey's termination to oversee the Russian Federation investigation, had widened his probe to examine if the President attempted to obstruct justice, or intentionally tamper with investigations surrounding himself or his associates.

Sen. Marco Rubio says it's best for the country to let the FBI's investigation into Russian Federation meddling in the 2016 presidential election take its course, and the Florida Republican tells CNN's "State of the Union" that's what he'd advise President Donald Trump.

"He's not afraid of the investigation-there is no investigation... there is not an investigation of the president of the United States, period".

DICKERSON: Is it your view, and just to educate viewers, that - that if you were under investigation, there would be an obligation for the special counsel to let you know?

Already, they've floated the idea that Mueller could be biased because some members of his investigative team have made campaign contributions to Democrats and because Mueller interviewed for the Federal Bureau of Investigation director's job after Trump fired Comey.

That follows the line of thinking by Trump's personal attorney, Jay Sekulow, who said on a number of Sunday news shows that Trump wasn't under investigation. "In fact, to the contrary", he told CBS' "Face the Nation", pointing to recent testimony by sacked FBI director James Comey who said the president had not been the target of an investigation.

"It looks like we have got a simmering tea kettle here, and the President seems to be testing the waters about whether he ought to go ahead and fire Robert Mueller", said Richard Ben-Veniste, former Watergate prosecutor.

Neither do I, for that matter. He said a Friday tweet from Trump was specifically directed at a story in The Washington Post about the expanding probe into Russia's election meddling.

However, what needs to be mentioned is that the "witch hunt" reference was not a one- off tweet.

Some of Sekulow's exchanges with Wallace were tense and confusing, leading Wallace to say, "Oh boy, this is weird". Trump's tweet about the witch hunt only served to confirm the reports.

While many on the left are hoping to see President Trump kicked out of office prior to the 2020 election, Donald Trump himself apparently has other ideas.

Spicer said Monday's news conference was off-camera because "there are days that I'll decide that the president's voice should be the one that speaks".

"I don't believe it's going to happen", said Rubio on CNN's "State of the Union".

While total silence won't work, a more measured public approach may be prudent, Dillon said.

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has become the latest senior Trump administration official to hire a private attorney, a Justice Department spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

Several congressional panels continue to investigate Russians meddling in the USA election which has cast a shadow over the early months of Trump's presidency.
