Jaguar Unleashes Its Most Powerful Production Car Ever

Jaguar Unleashes Its Most Powerful Production Car Ever

It puts 591 hp (441 kW) of power to the road through all four wheels, and makes the vehicle capable of dispatching the 60 miles per hour (98 km/h) sprint in just 3.3 seconds. Another mission was to showcase how Jaguar's smallest saloon would cope with most amount of power the brand has on hand to exploit in a roadworthy auto. There is a standard variant which gets four seats, while the optional two-seat Track Pack gets lightweight racing seats made of carbon fibre, a four-point racing harness and a half roll-cage. The auto is a follow-up to 2014's F-Type Project 7 and was developed to showcase the performance capabilities of Jaguar Land Rover's in-house tuner.

To give the Project 8 handling chops to match this power, SVO engineers have comprehensively reworked the XE's chassis and suspension, fitting stronger and lighter components, stiffer springs, continuously variable dampers with track settings and carbon ceramic brakes.

Jaguar promised us it would "sound like no other Jaguar", and while that's not entirely true (there's more than a hint of F-Type SVR there, as you'd expect), there is a healthy dose of supercharger whine.

Jaguar's most powerful road-going auto will become the second Collectors' Edition vehicle from SVO, following the successful launch of the Jaguar F-Type Project 7 in 2014.

Like the chassis, the aerodynamics are manually adjustable: the carbon rear wing sits on CNC-milled aluminium supports, and can be set in one of two positions; the front splitter can be manually extended. No, definitely not. The XE SV Project 8 is powered by a monstrous supercharged 5.0-liter V8, in an absolutely new state of tune.

It has already been tested at a range of competition venues, including the Nürburgring Nordschleife, and Jaguar is understood to be preparing for a lap record bid at the German circuit later this year. Its codename: Project 8. Jaguar's quickest road vehicle, the XE SV Project 8 can hit a top speed of 320km/h and can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds. The Project 8 is a four-door sedan with supercar performance and to ensure its exclusivity, no more than 300 examples will be created, each assembled at SVO's Technical Centre in Coventry.

Unlike BMW's M4 GTS, Project 8 is four-wheel drive, a maximum 30 per cent drive going to the front axle.

Jaguar will offer some customisation options so customers can personalise their Project 8, but that refuses to budge when it comes to either wheels or tyres.

Like it did with the F-Type SVR, Jaguar opted to fit the Project 8 with an eight-speed automatic transmission, rather than a dual-clutch box like many of its competitors use. And will you be giving them first refusal on Project 8? "Project 8, for me, is that concept taken to its logical extreme".

The most potent road vehicle from Jaguar has been officially unveiled in the United Kingdom with the XE sedan transformed to become the XE SV Project 8.
