President Trump singles out Irish journalist to comment on her 'nice smile'

In a follow-up article for RTÉ News, Perry explained that reporters would normally get their footage from outside the White House, but that today they were invited inside for the phone call. "We also hope you agree with us that no one, and especially not the President, is above the law".

She described the encounter as a "bizarre moment".

"Where are you from, come here, come here, where are you from?" he then asks Perry.

Trump was speaking to Leo Varadkar, and as members of the Irish press were leaving he said: "We have a lot of your Irish press watching us".

During Taoiseach's Questions Mr Varadkar said he looked forward to renewing the long-standing bonds of friendship between Ireland and Canada.

Ms Perry laughed as she approached his desk and after a brief exchange she returned to the press pack as Mr Trump resumed his conversation with Irish PM.

During the call, Trump said: "We have so many people from Ireland in this country".

Mr Trump sparked outrage when a 2005 recording of him claiming he could do "anything" with women emerged during his election campaign previous year.
