J&K: Mehbooba govt to discuss GST implementation in state on July 4

Tarigami said that is the reason Opposition parties are demanding a separate state law for implementing GST in Jammu and Kashmir.

The GST Council was a flawless experiment in a federal institution where 31 state governments and the centre together took hundreds of decisions and each one of them by consensus.

The official sources said that the PDP-BJP government had chose to go ahead with the GST following an appeal was made by Union Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley, who also warned that the State would only suffer in case it fails to implement the GST.

In a letter to Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, Jaitley had said that the state has actively participated in the GST deliberations and should join the nation-wide wide roll out of Goods and Services Tax from July 1. "After that, the GST regime will become operational in Jammu and Kashmir".

The traders have also shown concern over the rollout of the GST in Jammu and Kashmir. "The consumer states will benefit the most instead of manufacturing states getting the cream under Sales Tax and VAT regimes".

He said that state cannot afford to stay away from GST saying "no business" can be transacted as J&K will not be part of the GST network, an IT platform that is taking over the entire business across India.

He said that wholesale trading community is also reeling under the shortage of goods and with double taxation the state government has to suffer with huge loss of Rs. 6-7 thousand crores.

He said a perception has been created that the GST would impact the special status and the fiscal autonomy of the state, but there is no compromise on Article 370.

Finance Minister while answering to the questions of reporters said that false information is being spread that state has no control on exemptions. "We will fight it tooth and nail come what may", its president Muhammad Yaseen Khan said at a press conference.

The KTMF leader, Bashir Ahmad Rather, in an interview said that all stakeholders should observe strike on Saturday to protest implementation of GST which was a direct attack on special status of the territory.

"I don't think there will be a teething problem with GST". Department officials have been imparted training for GST and around 300 plus workshops have also been organised across the state in which new tax system GST has been explained at micro level. The prices in Jammu and Kashmir would be higher than the prices in other states.

"We will take a final call", Finance Minister said while announcing scheduled all party meet. "We can not turn a blind eye to our constitutional and political issues while fighting for Azadi", he maintained.
