Wayne Rooney will join Everton before the end of the week

Rooney exploded onto the national consciousness with two seasons at Goodison Park before joining United in a £20 million transfer just weeks after scoring four goals at Euro 2004.

And that has opened the door for Manchester United to once again enquire about the possibility of bringing the 24-year-old Lukaku to Old Trafford this summer, according to the same story.

Koeman's Everton struggled at the start of last season. He's also the leading scorer for both sides.

However, the report goes on to suggest that as of yet, no deal has been agreed for the England captain, and other clubs are still interested in him. Perhaps it will demonstrate what a crucial presence he could be a 2018 World Cup squad full of young, emerging talents.

The United captain had a year left on his current £300,000 a week deal, but the move to Everton will be all about getting more playing time under his belt.

Yet it is it the prospect of Rooney arriving at Everton that is set to dominate the sporting agenda in the next few days, with Everton expected to confirm his arrival imminently.

Rooney has struggled to show his top form for the Red Devils in recent times.

Paper Round's view: The second top-scorer in Ligue One last season with 28 goals, a new striker will be most welcome at the Emirates.

Rooney will join Michael Keane, Jordan Pickford, Davy Klaassen, Sandro Ramirez and Henry Onyekuru as part of an extensive summer recruitment drive on the blue half of Merseyside.

Rooney's best days may be behind him but he still retains a global status - making him the ideal acquisition as Everton continue their fiercely ambitious strategy of demonstrating their determination to be major players once more.
