Tesla Throws Shade at IIHS After Lackluster Crash Test

Tesla Throws Shade at IIHS After Lackluster Crash Test

A number of crash tests done by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety are challenging Tesla's Model S and the implication it is the safest vehicle out there.

A Tesla spokesperson defended the vehicle's safety rating, noting it had achieved the highest rating in the other four IIHS crash categories, and testing by the government's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the auto the top rating across the board.

Tesla countered that the most accurate independent safety test is done by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which previously found the Model S and Model X to have the lowest probability of injury of any cars that it has ever tested, earning them its highest safety rating.

The tests prompted the IIHS to rate the Model S's safety profile as "Acceptable" rather than "Good", its top safety level. Earning a good rating on the headlight test are the Continental's LED projector headlights, which are an option on the Reserve trim line.

The Continental also earned a "superior" rating in the crash avoidance and mitigation category, which Lincoln credits to the sedan's optionally equipped Pre-Collision Assist with pedestrian detection safety technology.

To obtain the highest IIHS rating, automakers ought to include a frontal crash prevention system with automatic braking abilities to avoid a rear-end crash. Top Safety Pick+ has all those same requirements, but it also requires headlights to be rated Acceptable or Good.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is a non-profit set up back in 1959 by a trio of some of the largest automotive insurers at the time. Those with the best scores get TOP SAFETY PICK or TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards.

The Toyota Avalon qualified for the award after engineers improved the aim of the headlights on all of the models built after March, according to the institution. Other models have marginal headlights, and none receive a poor rating.

Tesla said the U.S. government conducts the most accurate and independent vehicle safety tests, which have found Model S and Model X to have the lowest probability of injury of any cars that it has ever tested.

In the small overlap front crash test, 25 percent of a vehicle's front end on the driver side strikes a 5-foot-tall barrier at 40 miles per hour.

Before this round of testing, the Chevrolet Impala hadn't been put through all the Institute's evaluations since it was redesigned in 2014, and it has never been rated for small overlap protection. That allowed the driver's head to hit the steering wheel hard through the airbag.

That is interesting considering the Model X is the only SUV to get such a rating from the federal government.

The Impala ranked higher in its front crash prevention system than the Taurus.

During the same test for the Taurus, IIHS found that the dummy's left lower leg was prone to injury.
