Former Kansas Jayhawk Traded to the Boston Celtics

Former Kansas Jayhawk Traded to the Boston Celtics

According to an ESPN report, the Boston Celtics are finalizing a trade to send guard Avery Bradley to the Detroit Pistons.

According to ESPN's Ramona Shelburne and Adrian Wojnarowski, the Celtics have been "aggressively" shopping a few of their pieces, including Bradley, Marcus Smart and Jae Crowder, in an effort to create more cap space as a result of the Gordon Hayward deal.

He averaged career bests across the board previous year, scoring 16.3 points per game in addition to 6.1 rebounds and being a lockdown defender. The same nearly certainly could not have been said for Bradley, who might (correctly) demand something close to the max, especially in a relatively weak free-agent class. Avery Bradley is an exact replica of him, and some might even say he is the more proven of the two.

The move could pave the way for the Pistons to part with guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, a restricted free agent who is due a huge payday.

Morris averaged 14 points and 4.8 rebounds per game last season. Bradley now brings some extra scoring punch - he averaged more points than any Pistons player last season.

He shot over 46 percent from the field and 39 percent from deep. Boston will need him in a large role as a perimeter stopper - and he does tend to rate much better than Bradley by defensive metrics because he is an active help defender in addition to providing quality one-on-one defense. Marcus is best suited at power forward, and he's also capable of sliding to center and guarding multiple positions.

Marcus Morris was taken with the #14 overall pick in the 2011 National Basketball Association draft by the Houston Rockets, one slot after his brother was taken at #13 by the Phoenix Suns.

Detroit - saddled in luxury tax with more than $66 million committed to Andre Drummond, Reggie Jackson, Tobias Harris and Jon Leuer for next season alone - was expected to match any competing offers on Pope.

The question now is what the Celtics do with all these forwards. The Pistons went 37-45 last season, a disappointing mark for a team that was in the postseason in 2016. Also, it allows President Stan Van Gundy to experiment with younger talent, like Stanley Johnson and Luke Kennard. If Johnson proves a major downgrade from Morris at forward, it may offset the improvement at shooting guard and leave the Pistons on the fringes of the Eastern Conference playoff race with Bradley's free agency looming.
