Marcel Kittel claims stage seven of Tour de France in photo finish

Marcel Kittel claims stage seven of Tour de France in photo finish

"Aru slipped away (a) bit I'm still happy with my ride ... he's going to have more pressure - we saw it past year he exploded in one of the last stages", the BMC rider said.

"They're getting a free ride, Sky", LeMond, who is on the Tour as an analyst for Eurosport, said in a daily chat with Reuters.

The victory helped Kittel take the green points jersey from French national champion Arnaud Demare, who finished 11th.

But after a nervous wait and several inclusive views of the finish line battle, Quick-Step's Kittel was awarded his third stage win of the year and 12th in total, matching the record for a German held by Erik Zabel.

The thrilling victory was the German's second consecutive stage win and third triumph overall at this year's event.

"I'd never climbed it before but of course I saw that last climb on the Internet when Chris (Froome) won in 2012 and Nibali in 2014, so that's why I made a decision to attack with 3km to go", said Aru.

I d prefer to take it day by day because I didn t expect to compete at the Tour.

Sagan, the world champion, was disqualified for elbowing Cavendish to the ground two days ago.

Away from the Tour, Sagan and Mark Cavendish kiss and make up.

"It's a bit sad that it's all about this decision", he said.

"It's still very close in the top 10 but this weekend we will see where everyone is at". Perrig Quemeneur, Frederik Backaert and Vegard Stake Laengen were caught by the peloton with 3 kilometers to go.

He remains 12 seconds clear of countryman and Sky teammate Geraint Thomas in second, while Australian hope Richie Porte stayed fifth a further 27 seconds adrift.

Nairo Quintana was the biggest loser of the day, coming in 14sec behind Froome, leaving him ninth overall at 54sec.

"It was such a long day". The whole day was a nervous one in the peloton.

"As we say, there is nothing to gain but so much to lose. It was quite a frantic finish".

Friday's 213.5km seventh stage will start from Troyes and finish in Nuits-Saint-Georges, with only one fourth-category climb. Perhaps better to think of these days as resembling a good burgundy, which needs a long time to take in the air before producing something with a special savour to it.
