Mars Surface May Be Too Toxic To Support Life

Magnesium perchlorate was placed under short-wave UV radiation, to simulate the same conditions on the surface of Mars. But new research suggests that life on Mars might be closer to science fiction than science after all.

This was a bit surprising for the researchers because the strain of bacteria used, Bacillus subtilis, belongs to a genus that actually does fine in the presence of perchlorates, as studies of the microbes in terrestrial environments have confirmed. But the team found that perchlorate could also be activated under the only effect of the UV.

Perchlorates have been found on Mars for the first time by the lg Phoenix from Nasa in 2008. Adding in additional environmental factors found on Mars like low temperatures, additional minerals found on Mars and a lack of oxygen also failed to keep the bacteria alive. Mars has a thin atmosphere, which often leaves its surface bathed in UV rays. Jennifer Wadsworth, who studies astrobiology at the University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom, recreated Martian conditions here on Earth and watched how bacteria handled it. However, a new study says the brine found on the surface could kill microbes and bacteria. However, this same substance can also simultaneously be toxic to the same bacteria it feeds, which depends exclusively on the presence of ultraviolet radiation and Mars has that in abundance. When they exposed it to UV waves like those on Mars, the cells became completely sterile within 30 seconds.

The research suggests that two other parts of the Martian soil, iron oxides and hydrogen peroxide, work with the perchlorates to further increase the toxicity.

RG: Does this discovery rule out the possibility of life on Mars at present?

Somewhere between the too-warm temperature at which the perchlorate would be deadly and the too-cold point where bacteria would freeze to death anyway, there should be a comfort zone.

The results "could have implications for potential contamination from robotic and human exploration of Mars", the statement said, in that those bacteria brought over to Mars by unmanned rovers or, in the future, humans would die quickly and would not pose a huge contamination risk.

M - Chances that life exists on the surface of Mars are dwindling, according to a report released Thursday, which shows that the planet is coated with toxic chemicals that can wipe out living organisms, rendering it "more uninhabitable than previously thought".
