North Sinai Attack: 26 Soldiers Killed or Wounded, 40 Terrorists Killed

Officials say that the militants unleashed a suicide vehicle bomb and heavy gunfire on an Egyptian military checkpoint in northeastern Sinai Peninsula on Friday morning.

The Egyptian army stated in response that security forces killed about 40 terrorists and defused six other vehicles meant to explode.

The military said it killed 40 assailants as it clashed with extremists in North Sinai, where ISIS is leading a deadly insurgency.

According to Egyptian security sources, attackers set off their explosive-laden vehicles while driving through the two checkpoints close to each other in the border city of Rafah in northern Sinai.

Separately on Friday a state security officer was shot and killed outside his home in Qalubiya, a province just north of Cairo, while on his way to Friday prayers, an interior ministry statement said.

Palestinian group Hamas has also condemned the attack, with spokesman Fawzi Barhoum describing it as "a cowardly terrorist act that doesn't only target Egypt and its stability, but also the security of all Arab nations".

The Egyptian military has released a video showing fighter jets targeting militants shortly after a Sinai attack that killed 23 soldiers.

Unlike their main organisation in Syria and Iraq, they have been unable to seize population centres, with one attempt to occupy a town in 2015 ending with the military unleashing F-16 jets against the jihadists. About 100 Copts have been killed in such attacks in mainland Egypt since December.

Egypt's president Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi announced a three-month state of emergency on Sunday night in response to the bombings after meeting his national security chiefs.

The military has killed several of their commanders, including their top leader Abu Duaa al-Ansari in 2016.
