Spider-Man: Homecoming has a very subtle Miles Morales reference

We got closer and closer and closer to working on it, and then they did that hilarious bit on Community at the beginning of last season where he got out of bed and was wearing Spider-Man pajamas, and he looked fantastic!

Recently, The Shadow League was in attendance as the new Spider-Man/Peter Parker sat on a panel alongside his co-stars and discussed his role in the movie, how it came to be, and the great responsibility he felt in trying to get the character 100 percent correct. Perhaps the least obviously amusing character, Michelle (Zendaya), a misfit classmate of Peter and Ned's, turns out to have a dark humour about her that makes us look forward to a bigger place for her in the later Spider-Man films. And because this Peter doesn't have spider-sense, he's too busy looking out the window to notice Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) come to his room and see him in his Spider-Man costume. From the opening Marvel logo to the end credits (well, after the end credits since it's a Marvel movie) I was grinning so hard I'm pretty sure my face is now stuck that way. As it turns out, Kevin Feige has wanted to use a scene like this going all the way back to Spider-Man 2, based on an old Spider-Man comic by J. Michael Straczynski. Clearly, no time is wasted reminding everyone that this movie rests in the same universe as the Avengers films. Desperate to prove his worth to his mentor Tony Stark/Iron Man and make a place for himself among the Avengers, Spider-Man sets out to stop the bad guy all by himself.

From there we are introduced to the mundane life of Peter Parker, played perfectly by Tom Holland. Now there's a pull quote for ya, Marvel... But it's a fine start to a new Spider-Man franchise, even if nobody except Sony accountants were really asking for one.

Michael Keaton reportedly only signed on for one film as Vulture/Adrian Toomes and while he could always return, "Homecoming" does set up at least one villain for the next installment. The villain's motives are clear and his threat is real; he is easily the most memorable Spidey film baddie in over a decade.

"For me it's one movie at a time", he told Entertainment Weekly. While she says she'll figure something else out to tell the press, he still grabs the sparkler from Happy and that's the last we see of them.

It's not unreasonable to believe that he could pass the torch onto Miles Morales, setting up an Ultimate Marvel Cinematic Universe. There isn't an ounce of fat on this film, packing in so many story elements and characters, while finding room for small, amusing asides and moments that make it an addictively rich, idiosyncratic and re-watchable movie. After six movies, Homecoming finally nails this crucial aspect of Parker's character model. Homecoming gets all of that right. Superhero cynicism aside, "Spider-Man: Homecoming" is really fun. Holland succeeds at being a plucky and invincible youngster who has to find his stride and understand what it takes to be a hero. The way the bigger world was localized down to a still up and coming Spider-Man's beat brought out the best of Spidey and the best of the MCU.
