F1: Bottas Wins Austrian GP Qualifying, 2nd Career Pole

F1: Bottas Wins Austrian GP Qualifying, 2nd Career Pole

Bottas's Mercedes led Vettel's Ferrari by less than a tenth after the first runs in Q3, with Hamilton's Mercedes 0.131 seconds further back in third.

Fellow Silver Arrow Lewis Hamilton finished third, but will start eighth on the grid after a five-place grid penalty for an unorthodox gear box change.

"I enjoyed it today", said Bottas after claiming his second career pole.

A Mercedes mechanic looks under the race auto of driver Lewis Hamilton of Britain during the second practice session for the Austrian Formula One Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria, Friday, July 7, 2017.

"A decent lap at the end, it wasn't flawless, but it was enough".

The Finnish driver ended the first runs of Q3 at the top of the timesheets, before several yellow flags prevented his rivals from improving.

Tight at the top as Bottas, Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel duked it out for provisional pole, with the Finn holding his position at the top of the rankings.

Hamilton had been in serene form around the Red Bull Ring on Friday, topping both sessions and out-pacing Vettel by nearly two tenths in Practice Two.

"Congratulations to Valtteri, he did a fantastic job and Sebastian has been very quick".

"We made changes for qualifying and I think the vehicle was good".

"I'll do the best job I can".

"I think you must try also to interpret the situation well".

Hamilton won past year with now-retired teammate Nico Rosberg triumphant in 2014 and 2015.

The drop means he can not equal Michael Schumacher's all-time pole position record of 68 at his home British Grand Prix next week. Mercedes had already changed it once on his auto before that.

Hamilton added: "It makes no sense for Valtteri to slow down, so he will push as hard as he can to win the race".

Television images showed, however, that he and Vettel had done so unprompted after they stepped out of their cars in the pit lane. "The auto was really good for the last qualifying".

"Actually, it's not the same, because I messed up", Vettel said. Sainz headed out but didn't come back as his auto came to a halt on the circuit.

"Mexico was a completely different offence, and we have seen Sebastian is not always able to control himself as much as he should", Todt, a former Ferrari team boss, told Sky Sports television.

Then came the two Red Bull drivers of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo, but the gap was slightly bigger than on Friday as Verstappen complained of understeer and front locking towards the end of the session. There has been bad blood between the Mexican and French rookie since they collided in Baku while fighting for podium places.
