J&K: Curfew brings normal life to standstill in valley

J&K: Curfew brings normal life to standstill in valley

Wani was a commander of the terror group Hizbul Mujahideen and was killed in an encounter by police on 8 July, 2016. The answer to the question is not an easy one. India says Wani was a terrorist who had taken up the gun.

Indian Police tell internet service providers to suspend their services amid first death anniversary of Burhan Wani. Burhan was killed by security personnel on July 8 a year ago.

Given the massive unrest triggered past year due to Wani's killing, authorities have beefed up security to ensure that situation remains under control. Burhan was a native of Tral. "Elsewhere in the valley, restrictions on the movement of people are being strictly enforced", he added.

The authorities will also enhance and deploy more security in the Valley especially in south Kashmir areas where protests and militant activities are on a spurt. Under this rule, people can not assemble at public places in large groups.

The holidays coincide with a protest schedule issued by the United Jehad Council (UJC), an amalgam of militant organisations operating in the Valley. Wani used social media to create a heroic image to influence the Kashmiri youth, as their peaceless life made them unable to think or understand reality in its real sense.

Muzaffar Ahmad Wani said in a video message.

More than 100 locals joined militancy past year and terrorists activities have been on the rise, out of which at least 17 had been initiated by the militants.

Moreover, Burhan was the total antithesis of what terrorism experts generally proclaim.

His martyrdom ignited widespread protests across the Kashmir valley with furious locals demanding an end to a spree of hostility and oppression from Indian forces.

Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi said the Centre was "well prepared" to handle any situation in Kashmir. There were reports of many motorbikes at police stations after they were confiscated to prevent people from moving around.

Escorted by the CRPF, the pilgrims consisting of 1,748 men, 401 women and 97 sadhus and sadhvis left in 75 vehicles for Baltal and Pahalgam base camps of Amarnath cave shrine this morning, officials said. As a precautionary measure, curfew was imposed in parts of Srinagar and Pulwama on Friday.

Such defiance on part of the Kashmiris has become a major headache for the political and security establishments in the state.

Three soldiers were injured on Saturday when militants fired at an army petrol party in Bandipora district.

Internet services were shut down and police raised barricades between neighborhoods.

Seven people have been killed in the volatile region of Kashmir when India and Pakistan engaged in cross-border shelling.

Since the death of Burhan, probably not a single day has gone when Kashmiris have not witnessed any violence.
