Jo Konta recuperates to overpower Hsieh Su-Wei at Wimbledon opener

Jo Konta recuperates to overpower Hsieh Su-Wei at Wimbledon opener

Eastbourne's Johanna Konta marched through to the last 16 of Wimbledon thanks to a comfortable straights sets victory against Maria Sakkari of Greece.

The difference was that Konta did not have to put in the monumental effort she needed to put in against Stan Wawrinka's girlfriend in their three-hour-plus marathon which lit up the Championships, the encounter taking just 76 minutes.

Johanna Konta trailed early but managed to come back and hang on for a 7-6 (4), 4-6, 10-8 victory over Donna Vekic on Centre Court. "To see her on Wednesday just being a mental rock out there under some really hard circumstances was in a way inspiring", Davenport said, adding that in the past Konta had buckled under pressure. The 95th-ranked Brengle did just that - and much, much more, stunning the 11th-seeded Kvitova 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 to reach the third round at Wimbledon. Two days of peace and quiet (and baking muffins, her latest hobby) before the pressure is heaped upon her shoulders once again.

Not surprisingly it was a little soon for Konta to start considering how she approaches this first meeting.

"In the heat of the moment I did a bad thing and I apologize for this", said Medvedev, who denied he was implying the chair umpire was paid off.

But Konta, who had only won once at Wimbledon before this year's run, says there is still room for further improvement in her game.

Jack Sock, who teamed up with Mattek-Sands to win an Olympic gold medal in mixed doubles a year ago, paid his own tribute to his ailing compatriot by penning her name on his tennis shoes, BETHANIE on the left and MATTEK-SANDS on the right. I really wanted to make that push for the second week for my singles. Meanwhile, fellow Brit Heather Watson progressed by beating Anastasija Sevastova 6-0, 6-4. I didn't feel like I played my best tennis.

"I think I overall trusted my game a bit more this time", said Konta, who is trying to become the first British woman to win the Wimbledon title since Virginia Wade in 1977. But entering the fourth round, No. 3-seeded Roger Federer and No. 4 Rafael Nadal, two players that have looked dominant in 2017, trail No. 1 Andy Murray and No. 2 Novak Djokovic as the favorites to win the Grand Slam. I don't want to think about the past, per se. Not many players get a home slam, so I feel very fortunate. I'm pretty sure favourites also come and go, they change daily nearly. I saw Aljaz won, too.

"I felt a little bit sick and exhausted", she told her post-match press conference. Konta's movement around the court is solid, and her serving got her out of trouble on more than one occasion on Wednesday, and so it might well come down to some of those free points.
