Venus Williams Entered Intersection Legally Moments Before Fatal Crash

Venus Williams Entered Intersection Legally Moments Before Fatal Crash

"Video surveillance footage was obtained from a community south of the intersection which recorded the traffic crash", the police department's statement said.

It happened June 9 in Palm Beach, Florida, taking the life of 78-year-old Jerome Barson.

NEW footage has emerged of a fatal vehicle crash involving Venus Williams - leading police to take back their previous claim that the tennis star was to blame.

Barson, 78, died two weeks later from injuries suffered in the crash, and the initial police report stated that Williams was "at fault for violating the right of way" of Barson's auto, which was being driven by his wife.

Michael Steinger, a lawyer for the Barsons, said the video confirmed that Williams blocked his clients' right of way. "There is nothing that disputes Ms. Williams' was in the intersection on a red light, and the witnesses clearly confirm the Barsons' had a green light and lawfully entered the intersection".

At a news conference there on Monday, she was asked if there was anything she wished to add to her statement about the crash.

New video evidence has revealed that the Grand Slam champion had the right of way as she entered the intersection of Northlake Boulevard in the city of Palm Beach Gardens, according to the police report. At that point, Barson's light turned green, and she barreled her auto into Williams' at 25 miles per hour.

Jerome Barson suffered injuries including severed arteries, organ damage and a fractured spine, his family's lawsuit said. She told police there was not enough time to stop, which resulted in her T-boning Williams' vehicle. She was forced to stop to avoid hitting the Ultima, which caused her to stop in the intersection.

"That I'm... that there are really no words to describe how devastating and...yeah, I'm completely speechless".

Williams faces a wrongful death lawsuit from Barson's family.

The case is still being investigated, but the new video evidence paints a clearer picture of what happened. After the crash he was taken to a local hospital and died two weeks later.

Williams, 37, is competing at Wimbledon, and on Friday she became the oldest woman to reach the fourth round since Martina Navratilova in 1994.

She has advanced to the third round of the Wimbledon tournament in London and is scheduled to play Japan's Naomi Osaka Friday morning.
