'Spider-Man: Homecoming' swings past rivals with $120 million opening weekend

'Spider-Man: Homecoming' swings past rivals with $120 million opening weekend

Sony and Marvel's Spider-Man: Homecoming has exceeded tracking projections with its opening weekend at the box office, pulling in a worldwide haul of $257 million. The franchise's prior film, "Amazing Spider-Man 2", opened to only $91 million domestically in 2014. Critics and audiences responded, with many calling Jon Watts' iteration one of the best Spider-Man films.

After keeping the buzz high for the past couple of weeks, Tom Holland starrer Sony's Spider-Man: Homecoming finally made its way to the theatres and has already broken the records set by the franchise. Under the watchful eye of mentor Tony Stark aka Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Parker starts to embrace his newfound identity as Spider-Man. Also featured in the movie are Donald Glover, Martin Starr, and Hannibal Burress. Tom Holland's performance in Spider-man: Homecoming has been praised nearly universally by the critics and the film too has received rave reviews across the spectrum. In the latest franchise entry, Gru and the crew reunite with his long-lost twin brother Dru (also voiced by Steve Carell) as they team up and take on Balthazar Bratt, a former '80s star who is looking to get revenge against the world.

Edgar Wright's heist thriller Baby Driver - Sony's second summer win - followed at No. 3 with an estimated $13 million from 3,226 theaters for a pleasing domestic total of $57 million against a modest $34 million net budget. Baby Driver fell only 37 percent in its sophomore outing.

It also didn't hurt that the rest of the releases this weekend weren't major, so the rest of the top earners were in their second weekends. "Wonder Woman" continued to impress with an additional $10 million in its sixth weekend, which brings its domestic receipts to a staggering $370 million and counting. Internationally, WW has surpassed Suicide Squad's $745.6 million global haul, making Batman v Superman, with its $873.3 million total, the only other DCEU movie ahead of it.

"Transformers: The Last Knight", was in fifth place with $6.3 million.

"Cars 3", "The House", "The Big Sick", "47 Meters Down", and "The Beguiled" round out the top ten. $10.6 million of the domestic total came from 392 Imax screens.
