Hospital: Ailing China Nobel laureate in critical condition

Hospital: Ailing China Nobel laureate in critical condition

Human rights lawyer Albert Ho called it a "marathon sit-in" aimed at sending a strong message to the Chinese government and President Xi Jinping that Liu should be allowed to leave China for medical treatment wherever he chooses.

A few days after the meeting, however, the authorities said they had approved the family's request to invite Western doctors to join Liu's medical team at a hospital in Shenyang in northeastern China.

Chinese leaders face two unpalatable choices, analysts say.

It cited a family member as saying that Liu Xiaobo's situation was better than Otto Warmbier, the U.S. student who was transferred from North Korea in a coma, and China should be able to transfer Liu out of the country. Chinese authorities prohibited Liu's family from attending the ceremony in Norway, and officials placed the medal and diploma on an empty chair in their absence. "If he leaves and makes political statements, it would be a unifying force for the world and rejuvenate a political reform movement in China that's reached a low - maybe even start a new wave". On Monday, dozens of people waved banners and chanted slogans as they staged a sit-in protest outside the Chinese government's representative office, urging Beijing to allow Liu to be treated overseas.

The staff member wrote on the NGO's website that they tried to call five of Liu's family members who were in Shenyang using different phones about 1,200 times starting at 5pm, but only three calls went through, and they were disconnected seconds later.

Asked if Liu was being treated there, the man, whose ID badge identified him as Teng Zhi, said: "Regardless of whether he is here or not, you can not go in unless you are a family member".

"The economy is strong, the military is rising - does China still care about global political opinion?" said Zhang Lifan, a liberal political commentator in Beijing.

They acknowledged the good quality of care Liu had been receiving from Chinese medics and agreed with the diagnosis of primary liver cancer. It issued an update Monday that appeared to highlight his deteriorating condition.

The hospital said in a short statement Liu was also suffering from kidney problems, with an increasingly swollen stomach, partial intestinal obstruction and falling blood pressure, and that in his condition, it was not appropriate to treat him with radiotherapy.

"The national experts group's view is that the patient is in critical condition", the statement said.

Liu, 61, was granted medical parole and released from jail last month after he was diagnosed with late-stage liver cancer.

One clip showed Chinese doctors asking whether there was any better treatment possible for Liu, followed by a man, identified in text posted with the video as German doctor Markus Buechler, saying: "I don't think we can do better in Germany".

The embassy said Monday the recordings were made against the wishes of the German side and leaked to some Chinese state media.

"It seems that security organs are steering the process, not medical experts", the embassy said.
