Now Is the Time to Buy Facebook's Oculus VR Hardware

Facebook-owned Oculus has cut the price of the Oculus Rift headset and Touch controllers, as part of its "Summer of Rift" promotion.

Just a year ago, the Oculus was being sold for $600, which rose to $800 overall when you added the cost of its $200 Touch controllers (in my opinion, the Rift is only truly worth it when you use Touch).

During the same Summer of Rift event, Oculus also plans to announce some new titles as well as offer significant deals on games, all leading to Oculus' annual developer conference, Oculus Connect 4, scheduled for October.

There are stacks of games now available through the Oculus online store, more than 500 in fact, including Star Trek: Bridge Crew, Batman: Arkham VR and Elite Dangerous.

When Oculus first released the price for the Rift headset in 2016, some thought the cost was too high.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg wearing the Oculus Rift with touch controllers. The HTC Vive costs $800.

Oculus' vice president of content Jason Rubin said the latest sale is aimed at people who "may have been sitting on the sideline because of price", according to The Verge.

$200/£200 off is nothing to sniff at, and while I know that £400 is still a lot of money, it's the best price we've ever seen for the VR hardware.

Back in 2014/2015, Oculus was the go-to company as far as virtual reality was concerned, then in 2016, things began snowballing downhill pretty quickly. He said that there are some multiplayer games in the pipeline, such as Echo Arena, Star Trek: Bridge Crew and so on, which will accelerate the adoption of the VR headset. Coming in second was the PlayStation VR headset, which SuperData said shipped 375,000 units.
