Wimbledon: Serena Williams and Jelena Ostapenko set up clash of generations

Wimbledon: Serena Williams and Jelena Ostapenko set up clash of generations

Williams, the only remaining former champion left, will now take on the reigning French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko in the quarterfinals.

The tactic seems to be working out well on Wimbledon's fast lawns.

Spaniard Garbine Muguruza, the 14th seed, ended Kerber's tournament and the German's reign as No. 1 in the world with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory in the Round of 16 in London on Monday.

But it was Venus Williams who was given the pride of place to start proceedings on Centre Court, where she was pitched against an opponent nearly half her age.

Williams, seeded 10, made her debut in the grasscourt grand slam back in 1997. The 13th-seeded Latvian upset No. 4 seed Elina Svitolina of Ukraine 6-3, 7-6 (6) earlier in the day to win her 11th straight Grand Slam match.

Serving out the first game imperiously to love, Williams moved her opponent from side to side before breaking Konjuh to go up 5-3 and closing out the set without difficulty.

And Venus looks on course to reach her first SW19 final since 2009 after sailing past Konjuh into the quarter-finals.

She broke again in the third game of the second as Konjuh, who shortened some points realising that was to her advantage but not others, started to struggle.

She will face five time champion, Venus Williams in the quarterfinal.

Granted showcourt billing, Williams didn't hang around as she crushed 19-year-old Croatian Ana Konjuh 6-3, 6-2 in 64 minutes on Centre Court.

Not even missing a succession of match points stopped Jelena Ostapenko swinging her racket with brutal intent. How many children does she and Andy Murray have, and when did they get married?

Having survived three match points at 5-1 down, her fate was sealed by the relentless Williams serve.
