16 bodies found in Marine plane crash

16 bodies found in Marine plane crash

Speaking at a press conference late Monday, Leflore County Emergency Management Director Fred Randle also offered no explanation for the crash and stressed that the situation was still under investigation. Its last known location was over rural MS, and the resulting debris from the crash was found in LeFlore County, fewer than 100 miles from Jackson, the state's capital.

The KC-130 Hercules transport aircraft had taken off from Cherry Point, North Carolina, and experienced technical difficulties several hours into its journey.

The KC-130J Hercules aircraft is used for "air-to-air refueling, rapid ground refueling and logistic support", including transportation of troops or cargo, according to a Navy fact sheet.

According to a report from local news station WNBD, a MS airport official was quoted as saying, "The plane was being tracked by air traffic controllers in Memphis [Tennessee] and suffered structural failure at 20,000 feet that caused it to plunge into the field".

According to his recollection of the events, he and another witness made their way to the crash site, but by the time they got there, the plane had already been engulfed in flames.

16 people have perished in a Marine Corps airplane crash in Mississippi. "An explosive ordnance disposal team is at the scene as a precaution in the interest of safety", the release says.

The Marine Corps Times reported some of the Marines came from Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 452 (VMGR-452) in NY.

Fire Chief Marcus Banks told the Greenwood Commonwealth newspaper that debris from the refueling aircraft had scattered in a radius of about 5 miles (8 km).

The Marines, who traditionally use the KC-130 for aerial refueling, have not provided any information regarding where the plane was coming from or what may have led to the accident.

Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant called the crash a tragedy, paying tribute to Our men and women in uniform [who] risk themselves every day to secure our freedom.

The force of the crash almost flattened the plane, Jones said.

"Susan and I send our deepest condolences to the families of the Marines who lost their lives in service to our nation", said Sen.

He said first responders were driven back at one point by "high-intensity explosions" that may have been caused by ammunition igniting.
