Donor Recruitment Specialist Joshua Randall says blood supplies across the country remain at dangerously low levels following a severe decline in blood donations leading up to and following the July 4th holiday.

United Blood Services is the only blood provider to almost 70 hospitals across the Dakotas.

In the release, VBS says it strives to keep a supply of every blood type on the shelf at all times in order to meet the needs of patients are more than 20 hospital systems it serves. Donations from donors with the universal blood type O-negative are crucial due to the increase in accidents and trauma cases but donors of all types are needed.

Current forecasting projects a shortfall of 5,700 donations in July and greater shortfalls throughout the summer. The United Blood Services network is one of the nation's oldest and largest non-profit blood service organizations, and is a founding member of America's Blood Centers and the AABB (formerly the American Association of Blood Banks). 61,000 fewer donations than were needed were reported, prompting a call to collect more blood. Those relying on blood in the region receive that lifesaving blood from INBC. S in Birmingham at 10:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Volunteers must be 18 years old or older, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health.
