Facebook to start showing everyone ads in Messenger

This beta ads update is aligned with Facebook's goal to connect Messenger's 1.2 billion users with the 60 million businesses now on the social network. It won't be long, however, until we're all seeing ads on the Messenger homepage, so definitely get ready for that.

The ads will appear between conversation threads in the Messenger app, marked with a "Sponsored" tag.

Facebook is also experimenting with two other types of ads.

Facebook (FB) said on Tuesday that it will globally roll out a beta version of Messenger ads, expanding the list of marketers that can buy ads within the social media giant's Messenger app.

Messenger ads look similar to the kinds of direct-response ads that users already see in News Feed.

At this point, more than 1.2 billion people use Messenger every month.

There will be three possible ways for businesses to advertise.

The ads will use an auction-based model with user-targeting features and take users into a Messenger conversation with either a human or a bot when engaging with an ad.

Facebook wouldn't share any metrics on consumer acceptance during its tests in Australia and Thailand, which were first announced in January.

What's Facebook's motivation? Analyst Brian Wieser of Pivotal Research, says "If Facebook and Google did nothing else, the two of them together are 90% of all digital advertising...."

It started to open up Messenger to brands back in 2015, with the introduction of "click-to-message" ads, and the advent of its chatbot platform.
