Feds investigating why jet almost landed on other planes

The flight 759 Air Canada has almost caused what would have been one of the worst disasters in the history of aviation shortly before midnight last Friday at the global airport in San Francisco, California.

The Air Canada Airbus A320 was cleared to land at a runway at San Francisco global airport on Friday and the pilot began descending toward one of the taxiways, where four aircraft were waiting to take off.

That pilot's plane was waiting for clearance to take off with three others on a taxiway - the aviation equivalent of side roads that planes use to move between runways and terminals. The taxiway is less than 70 meters from the runway which is the closest allowable proximity for commercial jets. When air traffic control realizes the plane is headed for the taxiway, it is directed to go around and approach again.

Peter Fitzpatrick, an Air Canada spokesman, said Flight AC759 from Toronto "landed normally without incident" after it initiated a "go-around".

Typically, incoming worldwide planes air directed to one of two runways: 28L or 28R, referred to verbally as "28-Left" or "28-Right".

The FAA is now trying to determine how close the Air Canada aircraft came to the taxiway before pulling up.

An air traffic controller became aware of the problem and ordered the pilot to pull up and make another approach.

"If it is true, what happened probably came close to the greatest aviation disaster in history", said retired United Airlines Capt. Ross Aimer, CEO of Aero Consulting Experts.

One of the air traffic controllers replies that there are no other planes there.

Tower quickly tells the plane to "go around" and it peels off, narrowly avoiding a massive collision.

Aimer added that the incident had become the talk of pilots everywhere. "United One, Air Canada just flew directly over us".

"Yeah I saw that guys", the control tower responds. "As the investigation is still ongoing, we will not be making any additional statements on the incident at this time".

'If you could imagine an Airbus colliding with four passenger aircraft wide bodies, full of fuel and passengers, then you can imagine how horrific this could have been, ' he remarked.
