Nevada Governor Endorses Emergency Measures to Fix State's Cannabis Shortage

Nevada Governor Endorses Emergency Measures to Fix State's Cannabis Shortage

Nevada began the legal sale of recreational pot on July 1 amid major questions over whether there would be enough supply to meet consumer demand.

On July 7, Governor Brian Sandoval endorsed the department's call for a "statement of emergency", which would allow more dispensaries to become licensed distributors, the Reno Gazette-Journal reported.

While medical marijuana is legal in many USA states, recreational weed is legal only in Colorado, Washington, Oregon, and Alaska.

Instead, the order will allow state officials to decide on new rules to ease the shortage of marijuana - for instance by allowing booze wholesalers to cash in, according to local news station Fox 13 Now.

The statement claims that "no wholesale liquor dealer has met the application requirements to receive a marijuana distributor license", the only industry that is now legally allowed to distribute marijuana.

Almost 50 dispensaries in the state have licenses to sell marijuana for recreational use.

There's a reefer shortage madness in Nevada, where - after just one week of recreational marijuana sales - supplies are drying up. According to the Reno Gazette-Journal, "The taxation department has issued not one distribution license because of a last-minute court battle, incomplete applications and zoning issues, meaning dispensaries will not be getting a delivery for a while". Long lines of customers have formed at dispensaries that until last week had been authorized to sell only medical marijuana.

At this point, no wholesale liquor dealer has met the application requirements to receive a marijuana distributor license.

Segerblom - who has been a proponent of legalizing recreational marijuana, and even has a strain named after him - said if the Department of Taxation votes in favor of expanding the license eligibility, the cannabis conundrum will be immediately rectified. Several establishments told state officials they expect to run out in the coming days. A 15% tax on the cultivation of marijuana generates revenue that the state spends on public education. The statement signed by the governor warns that inaction "will result in many of these employees losing their jobs and will cause this nascent industry to grind to a halt".

Within the first four days of business, the 47 stores retail marijuana stores conducted more than 40,000 transactions and made around $3 million in sales.
