Article of impeachment introduced against Trump in House

Article of impeachment introduced against Trump in House

The resolution filed Wednesday by Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.) is largely identical to a draft Sherman floated last month - one that accuses Trump of obstructing justice by "threatening, and then terminating" former FBI Director James B. Comey and includes language lifted from the impeachment charges against President Richard M. Nixon.

Representative Brad Sherman alleges Mr Trump commited obstruction of justice by firing of former FBI Director James Comey amid agency investigations into Russian meddling in the U.S. election.

Sherman, who represents Los Angeles County's San Fernando Valley, is likely aware that the votes are not there for Trump to be impeached but may view this as an opportunity to push for changes within the White House.

While the Constitution does not allow a president to be ousted for "impulsive, ignorant incompetence", said Sherman, "it does provide for the removal of a President for High Crimes and Misdemeanors".

"It now seems likely that the president had something to hide when he tried to curtail the investigation of national security advisor Michael Flynn and the wider Russian probe", Sherman said.

In the emails, Goldstone tells Trump Jr. the information is "part of Russian Federation and its government's support for Mr. Trump". So far, only one other Democrat - Texas Representative Al Green - has publicly expressed support for impeachment proceedings.

Both chambers of Congress as well as a special prosecutor appointed by the Department of Justice are investigating Russian meddling in the USA presidential election and possible collusion between Moscow and the Trump campaign. Ignorance accompanied by a refusal to learn.

And Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), a law professor who sits on the House Judiciary Committee and has talked since January about the likelihood of a Trump impeachment, said he was surprised by Sherman's move. After the latest political drama on Capital Hill, Paddy Power now sees a 60% chance Trump will be impeached, the highest probability ever since the bookie started taking money on the bet. It would need to pass the House with a majority, where right now Republicans enjoy a 24-seat advantage. "However, as to obstruction of justice. the evidence we have is sufficient to move forward now".

It is the first time an article of impeachment has been made against Mr Trump.
