Chinese doctors scramble to 'rescue' ailing Nobel laureate

Chinese doctors scramble to 'rescue' ailing Nobel laureate

China's most prominent political prisoner was diagnosed with late-stage liver cancer in May and was transferred to the hospital in the north-eastern city of Shenyang.

"We are aware of reports that the medical condition of jailed Nobel Peace Prize laureate and writer Liu Xiaobo is rapidly deteriorating", USA embassy spokeswoman Mary Beth Polley said.

"As the authorities are controlling all the information about Liu Xiaobo's health condition, it's hard to verify if the information released on the hospital's website is true or not", Amnesty International researcher Patrick Poon said.

Two doctors from the United States and Germany visited Liu last weekend at the Shenyang hospital, and declared him well enough to travel.

The German government is urging China to allow imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo to leave the country for medical treatment.

China's cancer-stricken Nobel laureate Liu Xiaobo suffered respiratory failure as his condition worsened on Wednesday, his hospital said, amid anger over his treatment by the authorities and control over information about his health.

Ms Nauert added that Washington is anxious not only about the welfare of Mr Liu, 61, but of other dissidents held by China.

USA and German cancer experts visited Liu last weekend and determined that he was strong enough to be medically evacuated, but the hospital has issued pessimistic medical updates since then.

Liu's plight has come under a global spotlight amid allegations from his supporters that he had become gravely ill because his cancer wasn't detected and treated in time in prison - and that China has refused to let him seek treatment overseas for political reasons despite calls from other governments, including the US.

"So long as Liu is still breathing and conscious, we should keep calling for him to be released and go overseas with Liu Xia, even if it is the last thing he does", Hu said.

China has accused other countries of politicising the writer's case and interfering in China's internal affairs.

It added that Liu had a history of hepatitis B before imprisonment and prison authorities had provided him with an annual physical examination as well as monthly checkups, and no abnormal conditions had been found before the recent diagnosis.

If China were to release him, Jared Genser, a lawyer representing Liu internationally, said he was ready to evacuate him.

Amid the medical updates, a video was leaked earlier this week showing the Western doctors praising their Chinese counterparts as they stood by Liu's bedside.

Mo Zhixu, a family friend, told Efe that as far as he knew, Liu and his entourage continued to seek to leave China.

"We understand that the Chinese hospital treating Liu has invited USA and German medical experts to China for consultations", she said.
