Information compromised at Trump Hotel in Vancouver

Information compromised at Trump Hotel in Vancouver

The notification mentioned that an unauthorized party had gained access to the data, dating back to August 10, 2016, and that the data was last accessed on March 9, 2017.

Trump Hotels, which claims "the privacy and protection of our guests' information is a matter we take very seriously", said (pdf) Sabre notified it about the breach on June 5.

"We recommend that affected guests review the information in this letter for some steps they can take to protect themselves against potential misuse of their information".

Trump Hotels has become the latest accommodation group to put its hands up as a user of the compromised Sabre SynXis Central Reservations system.

The attack "did not affect Trump Hotels' systems", the statement reads.

Trump International Hotels Management paid the state of NY over $50,000 in penalties past year after failing to immediately notify guests that their personal information had been breached.

Hotel chains have lagged behind many other businesses in protecting their networks, security analysts told the Washington Post. What is known, however, is that more and more hospitality chains are now announcing that customers have been impacted and the breach of their consumers' personal financial information is damaging to both the customers and to the brands they've come to trust. Hotels hit by the cyber-attacks are located in New York, Chicago, Toronto and Las Vegas. Hard Rock notified customers on July 6, with Four Seasons and Trump Hotels waiting nearly another week to break the bad news.

Within the past two weeks, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, Hard Rock Hotels & Casinos, Loews Hotels, Carlson Wagonlit Travel used by some Google employees (pdf) and now Trump Hotels started notifying customers of the data breach. Given yet another disclosure of a hotel using Sabre software being hacked, this may actually be the tip of the iceberg in terms of a widespread hacking campaign that may involve many other hotel chains as well.

'Why are hackers targeting hotels? "If more people are staying there in an attempt to curry favor with the government, the fishing pool of targets is certainly greater than it was prior to November". "This incident occurred on the systems of Sabre Hospitality Solutions (Sabre), a service provider used by Trump Hotels".

In May, Trump signed an executive order on cybersecurity created to hold the heads of federal agencies accountable for cybersecurity risks and breaches in their networks.
