President Condemns Attack on Amarnath Yatris in Jammu and Kashmir

President Condemns Attack on Amarnath Yatris in Jammu and Kashmir

So far, 1.57 lakh pilgrims have performed the Yatra and paid obeisance inside the Amarnath cave situated 3,888 metres above the sea-level.

Kashmir police chief Munir Khan said that there were credible inputs that suggest LeT was responsible for Monday's attack, which also left 19 pilgrims injured.

The attack breaks an unspoken code of not harming the pilgrims, and, therefore, the state's tourism-dependant economy, and is a signal that Pakistan is upping the ante, added Gurmeet Kanwal, defence expert at the Institute of Defence Studies and Analysis. However, the army vehicles were damaged in the attack.

As Sheikh ducked to save himself, three bullets hit the bus owner, Harsh Desai, who was sitting by his side.

The police also said that the bus had been traveling at night, despite instructions to avoid the roads after dark. Last month, China said Indian troops crossed an worldwide boundary, while India argued its forces were mobilized in response to the construction of roads close to the trijunction border between India, Bhutan and China, threatening the security of Indian ally Bhutan.

"They fired more than 150 rounds before escaping through a maze of lanes and bylanes", said an officer.

The 40-day pilgrimage to the holy cave of Amarnath in the mountainous region of south Kashmir started on June 29 from the twin routes of Pahalgam in Anantnag district and Baltal in Ganderbal district.

Meanwhile, as the annual pilgrimage continues, the central government issued the "highest alert" in Jammu and Kashmir. "They should be killed as they are killing innocent people", Sheikh demanded. We convey our condolences to the families of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to the injured.

"We're investigating the attack, but we know certainly that the Lashkar has done it".

"The kind of restraint that they are exercising sometimes entails risk to their lives and jobs", he said.

But the militant group rejected the allegation, calling the attack "reprehensible", and accusing India of trying to sabotage the freedom struggle of the Kashmiris.

"No Kashmiri has ever targeted any pilgrims, and this barbarity and atrocity is the trademark of Indian forces", the group's statement said.

India accuses Pakistan of pushing in militants from its part of Kashmir to carry out attacks, a charge denied by Islamabad.

"My two brothers are studying in India", school teacher Shagufta Kaunsar said. "The nation saw how a chief minister fulfilled her responsibility", he said. "Possibility of backlash can't be ignored", he said in a Twitter message.

"But no one is applauding this latest attack - the worst on Hindu pilgrims in years".

Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani and his deputy Nitin Patel interact with Salim on Tuesday.

Rupani also spoke to the Jammu and Kashmir government to ensure that proper care was provided to the injured hospitalized in Kashmir. Many shops and businesses were shuttered for a protest strike in Jammu.
