Chicago Cubs acquire Jose Quintana from Chicago White Sox

Chicago Cubs acquire Jose Quintana from Chicago White Sox

Before the second-half of the season starts back up on Friday, the Cubs made a blockbuster deal with the Chicago White Sox, trading for pitcher Jose Quintana, according to the White Sox official Twitter.

Quintana has gone 4-8 with a 4.49 ERA (52 ER/104.1 IP) in 18 starts for the White Sox this season, averaging better than a strikeout per inning for the first time in his career (109 strikeouts in 104.1 innings pitched), and remains on pace for his fifth-consecutive 32-plus start, 200.0-plus inning season in his career. The 28-year old Quintana is controllable through 2020 via a pair of club options, meaning that the Cubs achieved their goal of acquiring a starting pitcher to bolster their rotation that was *not* a rental. South side management has been public about their disinterest to trade with their Windy City partners in the past, and it is evidenced by the fact that the last trade between those two teams happened in November of 2006.

Jimenez is ranked as the No. 5 prospect in the game by Baseball America.

It's a move that gives the Cubs what they need for 2017, but especially moving forward as it appears likely Jake Arrieta and John Lackey will depart via free agency after the season.

In 1998, the White Sox obtained Jon Garland from the Cubs in exchange for pitcher Matt Karchner.

The list of players who have been LESS valuable than Jose Quintana over the last four years includes Madison Bumgarner, Zack Greinke, Johnny Cueto, Stephen Strasburg, Chris Archer and Jacob deGrom. Adding those prospects rose their farm system to the third best overall at the beginning of the season, and the addition of Jimenez and Cease might bump them up even more.

In case you're curious about whether or not the Cubs and White Sox make deals often, the answer is "no".

Are Moncada and Kopech really more valuable than a known commodity like that?

Cease is considered the Cubs top pitching prospect despite not pitching above High A since being drafted in the sixth round in 2014. He has struck out 109 batters in 104 1/3 innings.

This blockbuster trade was a flawless combination of players for both teams.
