DOJ charges more than 400 people with healthcare fraud

"We are sending a clear message to criminals across this country; we will find you, we will bring you to justice, and you will pay a very high price for what you have done", Attorney General Jeff Sessions told reporters in Washington, DC on Thursday, describing the action that involved over 1,000 law enforcement agents across 30 USA states.

Sessions cited the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for reporting that the opioid epidemic kills more than 90 people every day.

Six doctors, for example, are accused of prescribing unnecessary opioids in MI and billing Medicare for $164 million in false or fraudulent claims, Sessions said.

Over 400 people have been arrested in a major federal crackdown on healthcare fraud, the Department of Justice has announced.

"We want to send a message to those that are violating the law that we are coming after you", Sessions said.

The barely controlled pumping of hundreds of millions of doses of opioids into U.S. communities during the past decade is blamed for a sharp surge in addiction and overdose deaths which totalled an estimated 60,000 previous year. It said that a result of the operation, 295 healthcare providers were in the process of being suspended or banned from participating in federal health programs.

Sessions said suspects accounted for more than $1.3 billion in fraudulent transactions across more than 20 states, and at least 120 people were charged for their alleged roles in over-prescribing and distributing opioids, making it also the largest-ever opioid-related fraud takedown. "History showed it worked in the 1980s and 1990s". Some of the those prescribed pain-killers, authorities said, were re-sold on the street to addicts. Earlier this year, he announced that he was directing federal prosecutors around the country to pursue the highest possible charge in cases, including mandatory minimum sentences for drug offenders. In 2015, the number of opioid overdose deaths was "approaching 60,000", Price said.
