Eleven People Killed in Saudi Fire

The region's governor has ordered an investigation and expressed concern over workers' accommodation, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

At least Eleven Indian labourers died of asphyxiation in Saudi Arabia in a fire that engulfed the windowless house they shared, Saudi authorities said Wednesday. She sought the assistance of the Ministry of External Affairs to bring back his mortal remains.

The blaze broke out at a three-storey house that does not have windows.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj was appraised of the incident and said that officials of the Indian consulate in Jeddah are rushing to Najran. She said in a tweet that she was aware of the fire tragedy in Najran in which 10 Indian nationals were killed, while six injured are in the hospital. Our Consul General is in touch with the Governor of Najran. Najran is 900 kilometres from Jeddah.

The casualties all hailed from India and Bangladesh, Saudi Gazette reported. "He is updating me on regular basis", she added.

The workers who were living in the building were employed by a construction firm.

Preliminary reports said the fire broke out due to an electric short circuit in an old air-conditioning unit in the house.

Despite years of criticism, Saudi Arabia still mistreats its labor force. The oil-rich kingdom is home to nine million foreign workers, many of them from South Asia.
