Nouri suffers permanent brain damage

Nouri suffers permanent brain damage

It was reported earlier by the BBC that Nouri could suffer from cardiac arrhythmia, a group of conditions in which the heart beats irregularly.

The Amsterdam-born Dutch underage global collapsed during his side's game against Werder Breman in Zillertal, Austria on Saturday.

Ajax have announced that midfielder Abdelhak Nouri has suffered serious and permanent brain damage after collapsing during a friendly.

Paramedics provided him with emergency treatment on the scene, but he eventually had to be transported to a hospital by helicopter.

An initial brain scan at the start of the week couldn't find any anomalies, while his heart was "functioning normally".

"This is most likely due to insufficient oxygen supply to the brain after the midfielder became unwell during the Ajax - Werder Bremen match in Hippach".

Former Ajax goalkeeper and current chief executive Edwin Vab der Sar said that it was "the worst possible message". This is a huge blow for Ajax, even if we knew this scenario was a possibility. They were uncertain days, lots of people in different ways have sympathised with his situation and is greatly appreciated.

Nouri - a product of Ajax's youth system - made 12 senior first team appearances for the club last season in the Eredivisie and Europa League respectively, and has represented the Netherlands at youth level from U15 to U19. "It's awful. We feel enormously for his parents, siblings and other relatives", said Ajax's chief executive, Edwin van der Sar.
