Premier League clubs' pre-tax losses 'unlikely to last' - Deloitte

Premier League clubs' pre-tax losses 'unlikely to last' - Deloitte

The Premier League is set to remain by far the world's richest football league, its clubs earning approximately €2bn (£1.7bn) more collectively than those in Europe's second richest, the German Bundesliga, according to the annual review of football finances by the consultants Deloitte.

The top 92 Premier League and Football League clubs posted record revenues of £4.4bn ($5.7bn) in the 2015/16 season, analysis done by Deloitte has shown. That is a combined operating profit of more than £1.6 billion over the past three seasons, more than they managed in total over the previous 16 seasons combined.

Although England's clubs will not publish their accounts from last season for several months, the Premier League has already disclosed its distribution of TV and sponsorship money last season, which Deloitte calculates was 45 per cent higher than in 2015-16. The division's top six wage spenders in 2015-16 filled the top six positions in 2016-17.

Leicester's unexpected triumph was all the more astounding given their wage bill of £80m - less than a third of Manchester United's £241m and comfortably below the Premier League average of £114m.

The report's editor, Dan Jones, predicted Premier League revenues would top £4.5bn by 2017-18, a confident assessment in contrast with another report published on Monday by financial analysts Vysyble, which warned of risky levels of overspending and said clubs were not meeting rising costs of transfers and wages.

Projected total earnings of the 20 English Premier League clubs last season.

Antonio Conte has a lot of work to conduct in the transfer market if he is to make Chelsea a force on the continent as well as defend their Premier League crown.

"Even in the final year of its old broadcast contracts, Premier League revenues continued to set new records", Dan Jones, a partner in Deloitte's sports business group, was quoted as saying.

This assessment contrasts starkly with a report published on Monday by financial analysts Vysyble which claimed Premier League clubs were recklessly overspending and heading to financial ruin.

First, there is the fact the Premier League clubs actually recorded a combined pre-tax loss in 2015-16, which Jones said was a result of "exceptional, or one-off, accounting adjustments".

"Huddersfield Town's promotion at the end of the 2016/17 season again demonstrated the opportunity for any Championship club to reach the Premier League, regardless of their budget".
