UAE's Etihad Airways says end of codeshare with American Airlines "regrettable"

UAE's Etihad Airways says end of codeshare with American Airlines

First, American scoffed at the Middle East airline's interest in buying as much as 10 percent of the USA company.

The feud between American Airlines Group Inc and Qatar Airways Ltd keeps escalating.

Maintaining the program "no longer (makes) sense for us", an American Airlines spokesman said. The agreement was a way for airlines to book passengers on each other's flights.

Major US airlines, including American, maintain that Middle East carriers Etihad, Emirates and Qatar Air have an unfair competitive advantage because they receive subsidies from their government owners.

Qatar Airways chief executive officer Akbar Al Baker apologised for calling all American flight attendants "grandmothers".

Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian said he was "appalled" by insulting remarks about U.S. flight attendants made by his counterpart at Qatar Airways.

"In light of our ongoing dispute over the Open Skies agreements, American Airlines notified Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways on June 29 of our decision to terminate our codeshare relationships".

Following this agreement, an interline relationship between Etihad and American would remain in place to connect passengers to secondary markets allowing customers from two airlines to buy connecting flights on one ticket.

The comments came amid an intensifying feud between Qatar Airways and American, which began last month with the disclosure that the Arabian Gulf carrier wanted to buy a stake of as much as 10 per cent in the US company.

On the same day, American confirmed that Qatar Airways intends to continue with its plan to acquire an unsolicited equity stake in the airline.

American Airlines and other dominant US aviation companies have accused Etihad, other consumer and business groups of relevant air transport agreements violations.

Etihad said that it is "disappointed with the decision. This action will reduce choices for consumers and may result in higher fares for travellers to and from the United States", the statement read.

US carriers say the alleged subsidies distort the air travel market and could threaten American jobs.

Qatar Airways Chief Executive Akbar al-Baker is seen during a commemorative signing wall event in support of Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani in Doha, Qatar, July 13, 2017.

The U.S. airline's own rules require advance approval from its board for the purchase of a stake of 4.75 percent or more.
