Yankees acquire first baseman Garrett Cooper

The New York Yankees today announced that they have acquired first baseman Garrett Cooper from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for left-handed pitcher Tyler Webb.

With the division rival Chicago Cubs pulling off a sizeable deal with the crosstown Chicago White Sox today, the Milwaukee Brewers didn't necessarily match it, but they made a deal of their own none-the-less. During two stints with the Yankees this season (6/22-6/25 and 6/27-time of trade), he went 0-0 with a 4.50 ERA in 7 relief appearances (6ip, 3h, 3r, 3er, 4bb, 5k, 1hr, .158ba).

In return, Cooper provides the Yankees get another option at first base, which has been a problem spot this year.

After the Chicago Cubs made big waves in the baseball world by trading a package of top prospects to the crosstown-rival White Sox for starting pitcher Jose Quintana, many Milwaukee fans wondered - and some anxious - whether the first-place Brewers would make a counter move to try and stay ahead of the defending World Series champions in the NL Central.

Cooper, 26, was batting.366 (102-for-279) with 64R, 29 doubles, 17HR, 82RBI and 33BB in 75 games with the Brewers' Triple-A Colorado Springs affiliate in the Pacific Coast League.

Cooper, 26, was a former sixth-round pick in the 2013 MLB Draft out of Auburn University. In five minor league seasons in the Yankees organization, Webb was 15-14 with a 3.45 ERA (248.0IP, 223H, 105R/95ER, 67BB, 312K, 21HR) in 150 appearances (five starts). Webb rose quickly through the system and was selected in the 2016 Rule 5 Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates, before ultimately being returned to the Yankees.
