As Trump 'abdicates,' Climate Alliance picks up slack

The United States Climate Alliance, formed by states committed to upholding the Paris climate deal, has reached 14 members and it now has a website. This set of options, which will highlight the significant levers available to states, cities, and businesses to further reduce USA emissions, will serve as a playbook for enhanced ambition among US climate leaders who are committed to meeting America's commitments under the Paris Agreement.

Today, former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg and California Governor Jerry Brown announced "America's Pledge,"a plan for cities and states to lead the way on cutting climate pollution 26 percent below 2005 levels by 2025".

"I am convinced that to be effective, action to address climate change must be taken at all levels of society, including by mayors, governors, local leaders, chief executive officers and others", said United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.

We call upon Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds and Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner to make the commitment to join the United States Climate Alliance and we call upon Clinton Mayor Mark Vulich, Davenport Mayor Frank Klipsch and all area mayors to become a Climate Mayor.

The announcement comes as California's Democratic governor leads efforts to push back against President Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement, a 2015 deal made among almost 200 nations that committed each country to lowering greenhouse gas emissions.

The United Nations' chief, António Guterres, said in a statement the plan to assess how USA cities, states and others are contributing to slashing global greenhouse gas emissions was "welcome".

It's the latest effort by cities and states, and Brown in particular, to fight back against President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw the United States from the global pact.

"In the US, emission levels are determined far more by cities, states, and businesses than they are by our federal government - and each of these groups is taking action because it's in their own best interest", Bloomberg said in a statement. "We're already halfway there". "The effort to aggregate and quantify the actions of subnational authorities and non-Party stakeholders in the United States via "America's Pledge" is welcome".

Presenting the legislative package to state senate lawmakers yesterday, Brown argued there was an urgent need to combat climate change, which he described as a "threat to organised existence", according to US News. "If the federal government insists on abdicating leadership on this issue, it will be up to the American people to step forward - and in Virginia we are doing just that".

"Something could happen with respect to the Paris Accord, let's see what happens".

The America's Pledge coalition is working with the World Resources Institute and the Rocky Mountain Institute to quantify the impact of the sub-national pledges, though the exact mechanism for those measurements remains unclear. "If it happens, that will be wonderful, and if it doesn't, that'll be OK too", President Trump said.
