Carolina Hurricanes 'close' to being sold

Carolina Hurricanes 'close' to being sold

The Hurricanes' current owner, Peter Karmanos, has been exploring sale options for a while now.

Karmanos purchased the Hurricanes as the Hartford Whalers in 1994, then moved the team to North Carolina in 1997. Bloomberg reported the sale price at roughly $500 million. Greenberg will seek to add local investors to the ownership group and plans to split his time between Raleigh and Dallas, said the people, who asked for anonymity because the negotiations are private.

Greenberg did not return a phone call and a text message seeking comment.

In the traditional point of press surrounding the weekend of the stars, the commissioner Gary Bettman has tried to be convincing on this topic by ensuring that the "Canes" will remain in Raleigh, putting a cross on the scenario of a relocation. The city of Las Vegas has got to be the 31st team in the league and the Golden Knights, whose owner Bill Foley, has paid approximately $ 500 million to bring a club in the City of vice, will compete in the first season of their history, starting in October. It's also more than double Forbes' recent estimate of the team's value - $230 million, least among US hockey teams.

The team also ranked last in the league in attendance for the second year in a row in 2016-17, drawing an average of just 11,776 fans to their 18,680-seat home arena and filling it to just 63 percent capacity - their lowest per-game average since they moved into the building for the 1999-2000 season.

The best way to improve those numbers, of course, is with a winning team - and it's been a while since Carolina had one. But as two conference championships and a Stanley Cup win in 2006 will attest, it is possible to have a championship caliber team in Carolina. They have the longest playoff drought in the National Hockey League at eight years.
