GOP operative who hunted for Hillary Clinton's emails killed himself

Emails from Smith's company and its effort to contact hackers show repeated references to former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

Republican political operative Peter Smith was found dead from an apparent suicide, according to public records just acquired by The Chicago Tribune.

The longtime GOP operative, a financier reportedly close to House Speaker Newt Gingrich in the 1990s, told the newspaper that he was not working in the Trump campaign. But in one recruitment document obtained by the Journal, Smith claimed links to Flynn, along with then-Trump campaign staff Steve Bannon, Kellyanne Conway, and Sam Clovis. Tait also said that Smith "never expressed to me any discomfort with the possibility that the emails he was seeking were potentially from a Russian front, a likelihood he was happy to acknowledge".

Working independently of the Trump campaign and starting in May 2016, Smith told the Wall Street Journal that he and his team worked to acquire tens of thousands of Hillary Clinton's emails that had been deleted by the former Secretary of State because they described "personal" matters. "If they were genuine, they would hurt Clinton's chances, and therefore help Trump". Smith told the Journal he had found several hacker groups, including two from Russian Federation, who claimed to have access to the emails, but he was unable to confirm their authenticity.
