Habitat for Humanity update on President Jimmy Carter

Habitat for Humanity update on President Jimmy Carter

Former U.S. president Jimmy Carter has been released from a Canadian hospital after being treated for dehydration suffered while participating in a charity building event, his foundation said Friday.

Carter, 92, became unsteady while working on Thursday on the steps of a home at a building project for Habitat for Humanity, a charitable organization that promotes affordable home ownership, eyewitnesses said.

Carter and his wife, Rosalynn Carter, shared on Friday "their appreciation for the many well-wishes he received worldwide", the Carter Center said.

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter attends a news conference in New York November 5, 2013. As a precaution, he was transported to St. Boniface General Hospital for rehydration, the statement explained. They are working with the organization to build 150 homes this week.

Carter - the USA president from 1977 to 1981 - and Rosalynn are longtime supporters of Habitat for Humanity and are helping the not-for-profit organization with a blitz build of 25 homes in the city. The couple, married more than seventy years, was planning to help with the Winnipeg build on Thursday and Friday. He appeared to wobble, so Secret Service agents led him to his motorcade.

Carter and the former first lady are in Winnipeg, working on their 34th annual Habitat for Humanity "Carter Work Project".

Roughly 18 months ago, Carter announced that he was free of cancer, a melanoma that had spread as far as his liver and brain.
