May 'shed tears' after losing majority in snap election

"So when the result came through it was a complete shock".

Theresa May has said she was "devastated" when she learned of the exit poll on election night that showed she had failed to win a majority and cried when her husband hugged her in condolence.

"In advance of the campaign she said she wanted to have an [election] to strengthen her mandate for Brexit and that didn't happen and what we now have is people are confused, anxious and nervous that the Prime Minister of whom they have no trust".

Far from the landslide she'd hoped for, the Conservatives lost their parliamentary majority, sabotaging her government's ability to impose its original Brexit vision.

"I was shocked at the result that had come through in the exit poll", May told interviewer Emma Barnett.

In a veiled attack on former prime minister David Cameron, she said it "would be easy to walk away and leave somebody else to do it", saying she felt she had to stay in Downing Street.

Speaking one year after she became the party leader, she said she took "responsibility" for the result and that there was "more" she could have done to tackle the concerns of voters.

As Theresa May marks the end of her first year in power, we look at what progress the Prime Minister has made since taking office.

'No, I didn't consider stepping down because I felt there was a responsibility there to ensure that the country still had a government'. During the #Brexit campaign, she sensibly kept a low profile keeping Eurosceptics within the party on her side. The result left her facing calls for her resignation. "As prime minister I want to get on with that job of changing people's lives for the better".

Mrs May said there should have been a more positive message during the campaign but she did not regret calling the election because it was "the right thing to do at the time".

"What I've said to my colleagues, is that I got us into this and I'm going to work to get us out". "I don't think many people in the Labour party saw it coming".

When asked about her informal coalition with the DUP - a controversial party who have infamously condemned gay marriage and abortion - May said: "One of the important things with that deal, was that we were very clear that the Conservative party was not going to row back at all in anything we've done on the equalities agenda".
