Norway PM Solberg accused of being 'relieved' at death of Liu Xiaobo

Norway PM Solberg accused of being 'relieved' at death of Liu Xiaobo

Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei says China's imprisonment of ailing Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo is "a shame for the Chinese government and a shame for the global community".

Oslo, Jul 14 The former chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee today justified awarding Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo with the 2010 peace prize which beijing slammed as "blasphemy".

"Naturally we are anxious about Liu Xia right now, because she has been suffering from depression and heart disease in the years since Liu Xiaobo went to prison", Poon told RFA.

Officials announced Liu's terminal liver cancer last month, and moved him to a hospital in Shenyang under high security but refused to release him for treatment overseas.

Liu was diagnosed with liver cancer earlier this year and released on medical parole just weeks ago from an 11-year sentence for writing a charter promoting democracy.

The Swiss foreign ministry has called on the Chinese government to allow Liu's wife, Xia, full burial rights and to guarantee her freedom of movement. The Nobel Committee have said that "the Chinese Government bears a heavy responsibility for his premature death". "We put forth our greatest effort, but we could not win your freedom while you were still living", Liu's friend and Beijing-based dissident Hu Jia said on Twitter.

But the harshness with which Mr Liu was treated, with the government not letting him go overseas for treatment despite calls by countries like the USA and Germany, has in part to do with the hardline approach that the current government has towards dissidents and dealing with Western governments' pressure to ease off on them, said Dr Lam.

Geng said China has lodged formal protests with the United States, Germany and the United Nations, among others. "So when we saw him we thought he was very much at peace", Teng said.

In a harshly critical editorial, the state-backed Global Times accused the West of politicising the plight of a political prisoner. He married poet and photographer, Liu Xia in 1996 while in the labor camp where he was held prisoner. Liu died of terminal cancer on Thursday, July 13, 2017, shortly after being transferred from jail to a civilian hospital for palliative care.

The death of Chinese pro-democracy activist Liu Xiaobo could revive talks in the U.S. Congress of renaming the street in front of the Chinese Embassy in Washington after the Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

"They used Liu's illness as a tool to boost their image and demonize China", it said.

Not all online posts were sympathetic to Liu, a veteran of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests whose advocacy for democratic reform infuriated the government.

Mr Liu died "peacefully" on Thursday afternoon, surrounded by his wife and other relatives, his main doctor Teng Yue'e said.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga, the government's top spokesman, said Friday that Japan is paying close attention to the human rights situation in China following the death of Liu Xiaobo. In the same statement Liu had prepared for his trial, he addressed his wife.

Geng also hit out at Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen for her comments on Liu and her calls for China to embrace democracy, saying her behavior was "very risky".

Chinese users have taken to Western channels to express their grief and remember Liu by.

Internet censors meanwhile scrubbed Chinese social media of comments related to the Nobel laureate, blocking search terms including Liu Xiaobo, LXB and RIP.

Human Rights Watch quickly condemned the Chinese government's treatment of Liu, noting that the last Nobel Peace laureate who died in state custody was pacifist Carl von Ossietzky in Nazi Germany in 1938. Link asked, a reference to Chinese President Xi Jinping.

While Beijing may have shrugged off foreign censure, authorities feared Liu's appeal at home, his supporters said.
