Pakistani PM's Daughter Could Be Brought Down by a Font

Pakistani PM's Daughter Could Be Brought Down by a Font

The JIT, which is probing allegations of money laundering against Sharif and his family, said Maryam Nawaz, her brothers Hussain and Hassan Nawaz as well as her husband Captain Mohammad Safdar (retd), had signed false documents to mislead the Supreme Court. While this piece of information may seem irrelevant to you - it turns out to be a key piece of evidence in a corruption investigation surrounding Pakistan's Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif.

"I already thought Calibri was the greatest font ever but I never imagined it would achieve legend status", one Twitter user said. Imran Khan, leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, and Bilawal Bhutto of the Pakistan Peoples Party have warned that democracy could be in danger if Mr. Sharif would not agree to step down. It said Sharif failed to satisfactorily answer most of the questions put to him during his appearance before investigators on 15 June.

A panel appointed by Pakistan's Supreme Court to look into the financial wealth and overseas assets of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his children has recommended that a corruption case be brought against the family.

The only problem: the document's date is from 2006, but the font of the text used in the document - Calibri - wasn't released until 2007. But the documents were dated from 2006 - and Calibri wasn't widely available at that point, making a good case that they were forged. Sharif claimed that his family "earned nothing after entering politics, but lost a lot".

Sharif was originally nurtured by the military as a civilian politician who would protect their interests, and he served as prime minister twice in the 1990s.

However, a source close to the government has told the Express Tribune that the leadership is concerned, and the "possibility to step down will be taken into account depending on how the proceedings of the Panamagate case in the top court unfold further". (PML-N) will be holding another meeting in Islamabad on Friday to review Panama JIT report.

The Sharifs have been the subject of a corruption investigation ever since last year's Panama Papers leak, which implicated them in a graft conspiracy.

"Every contradiction will not only be contested but decimated in SC", tweeted Maryan Nawaz Sharif (pix), Sharif's daughter, referring to Pakistan's Supreme Court.

The Sharif family has consistently denied the allegations against it and rejected the JIT report, with allies denouncing it as "trash".

Earlier, the members of PML-N's parliamentary party warmly welcomed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif by thumping desks on his arrival for the meeting.
